  1. Remember we are a 501C3. So you can still give a donation before midnight and get a tax deduction. Here is a rundown on some of the things that a donation would pay for. $4.00 will deworm 4 puppies, what a difference that can make $8.00 a vaccine, saves puppies every day $20.00 pays for one spay or neuter, the math is incredible on how many puppies or kittens one sterilization can prevent from being born $25.00 buys a bottle of doxycycline with 500 - 100 mg. tabs. This cures ehrlichia which affects almost every dog in Mexico, and it's also good for respiratory infections. When one pup gets one of those and there are 45 other pups in the rescue, it spreads like crazy. $25.00 pays for someone to work for seven hours cleaning up after and feeding our pups $25.00 pays for one soft carrier that one of our pups can ride in to fly to a forever, loving home $50.00 pays for one medium crate $100.00 pays for one large crate Other items that we use every day like: Vitamin B12 Wound gel Metronidazole for Giardia Ear cleaner Creams for skin problems - these are all $20 to $40 a container and we go through them fast. There are many more things of course but I just thought that it would be nice to know where the money goes. Thanks in advance to everyone who helps us help them. Happy New Year. On the left is Franklin, he's new, he was hit by a car but is doing much better now, Jeff has even let him sit on the couch. And on the right is Momma Elsa, who was used for breeding, she is so pleased to be here and even gets to sleep on the bed sometimes.
  2. Last weekend I went to an area called the Guatalupana. The government on the island has been absconding with property that belongs to the islanders. So a large group of Islenos squatted on a big piece of property mid island on the Carrabean side. It has been a few years now and they still don't have water, electricity or sewage. Most of the homes are shacks and many of the homeowners have dug wells or bought large water tanks that sit in their front yards. Of course there are dogs everywhere and when we have spay and neuter clinics we go there to pick up animals. And when we get donations we go there with de-wormer, collars, vitamins, food and medicine if needed. I would love sometime to be able to vaccinate all the animals but we will need a bigger budget for that as most of our funds go to the sterilization clinics. The children are wonderful and after many, many visits the people are used to seeing me hang around making a big fuss over their dogs.
  3. There has been a wonderful group of people that have supported Isla Animals for years. Cheryl House has created this group and stayed with it to help us save pups and spay and neuter every cat and dog we can get our hands on. This year has been one of the best as far as donations and we are so grateful and pleased with the work it has allowed us to do. Below is the list of donors and the beautiful dog that has sadly passed but instigated such generosity. His name was Dr. Zhivago. Thank you all for your support. 2011 ROSIE'S BOW WOW CLUB The club for 2011 raised a total of $2,950. In memory of Dr. Zhivago Extra Large Bones $300 & Over Cheryl House. 4. Jeff and I just got back to Mexico a few days ago. We're having a spay and neuter clinic next week and then the normal dog stuff from there. I would like to do a sweep of the island, door to door, working on vaccinations and spaying and neutering. I mean really - we've been back two days and we already have a very weak momma with eight pups. Then I got a call about another dog with eight pups and Jeff and I are about to go pick up four. This has to stop. I called my new momma - Momma Rina after the hurricane that wasn't. Here is our new mom warming up her pups after their bath this morning, such a good mom. This must be black dog week, out of the thirteen puppies there is only one white one. We are so looking forward to moving ahead this year. With all the rescue groups and people that we are working with now, we can get more done and we're hoping that we can get some help with this. Already we have some wonderful monthly donators, and it makes a huge difference. So many people ask me what they can do to help, well it's really easy. If we can get enough people donating $10.00 a month we will have a budget to work with. Ten people giving up two starbuck coffees every month can buy enough dog food for a week, or three spays or four neuters, or twelve vaccines, or five distemper tests, or four parvo tests, or two and a half medium crates, or ten bottles of specialty shampoos, or two bottles of de-wormer, or five dog rides to the airport, or five health certificates, and on and on. Every penny goes to the dogs, there is no administration, we pay Marcelino's salary (he works at the house and helps with the dogs). IT'S ALL FOR THE DOGS. We've been home three nights and already have two momma's with their pups. There is no where else for these dogs to go. We will find homes for the pups and spay the moms. Each spayed female is one step closer to a better life for dogs in Mexico. If you already donate, ask a friend to do it too, and ask their friends to do it as well. Ten dollars a month and we can make a huge difference together. I forgot to mention in this blog yesterday that the Isla Animals Website is set up to do monthly donations. If you scroll down to the very bottom of the front page there is a donate button, click on that and then there are instructions on how to continue. Thank you everybody, in advance, who donates. It makes all the difference. We are setting up for a big spay and neuter clinic today and getting ready for all the street puppies that we find.
  5. We are doing another big spay and neuter clinic in Corales near Rancho Viejo which is next to Cancun. This is our second clinic in this location. Last time we ended up with over fifty puppies. We can put the dogs back on the street but never the puppies. We often re-home the dogs if we can as well. Anyway it has been the worst year for distemper that I've ever seen. Unfortunately we lost about 20% of those pups to distemper. It only takes one distemper pup to infect an entire group of un-vaccinated puppies. So this April we're going to test every puppy that comes in. The tests are two hundred pesos a piece, about eighteen dollars, we want to have seventy five available for that last week of April. I'm asking if any of you can help by buying one or two tests it would make a huge difference. You can donate on our pay pal and make a note that it's for distemper tests and that's exactly what it will be used for. This is an extra cost that we didn't figure into our budget when we were making the original plans. On a more fun note, Isla Animals has had a small explosion of puppies. First we got a litter of nine. Pepe spotted the mom and her pups next to the bull ring in Cancun and has been waiting for them to be old enough to bring here. Then we got a moma and her seven pups. Everyone is healthy, has already been tested for distemper and is adjusting well. By the way Rusty is doing much better.
  6. The race was great. There's lots of room for improvement but for a first effort we are all very happy. To all of the incredible volunteers, Jeff and I are so, so grateful. And to those who helped set things up ahead of time with the city and the schools and the race route, we couldn't possibly have done it without you. We haven't finished with the tally because Jeff is still working at the music festival but as soon as we have numbers I will post them. We had over sixty runners thanks to all of you wonderful people who signed up to sponsor school kids. And for you generous supporters who sponsored teams of five, it added so much excitement. Unfortunately we couldn't fill all the teams but next year people will have a better idea of what's going on. The whole event was fun and involved the entire community. From the island government to the police department to the Navy that allowed us to run on the runway. We had help from the Red Cross, they sent their ambulance to be on standby. We had runners of all ages from many different countries. For the first year we couldn't have asked for more.
  7. What could be better than getting a puppy or dog off the street. How can you beat putting meat on a starving animals bones or help out a dog before it's abused and learns to mistrust humans. It's the best feeling in the world. Help me prevent another box of unwanted pups being left on a vacant lot. I can do all that and more if I have the funds. Help us turn this Into this It's a great gift idea for the person who has everything. You can buy them a monthly donation to Isla Animals. I will make sure that every penny that you donate is put to work. It's the most wonderful thing to know that we can count on a certain amount of money coming in each month. It allows me to plan ahead in this work that is other wise, to say the least, financially chaotic. And if you are looking for something different you can donate a certain amount of spays and neuters in someone's name. The surgery averages out to $20.00 an animal and it's the bottom line solution to overpopulation and suffering of animals in Mexico. Donate and then let me know by email bayfirestd@aol.com so I can make sure that a Christmas card is sent to your friend or family member. They will love it.
  8. Thank You to the Bow Wow Club For Your generous Donation!

Adopted Animals

These are just a few of our most recent adoptions.

Guapo Status: He is getting his head gear of April 18. Approx. Born: June, 2012 Vaccinations: He has one vaccination Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       Guapo belonged to a fisherman in the Guatalupana. His two dogs were chasing him when he left for work on his motto. When they got to the main road Guapo was hit by a truck. The owner didn’t want to do anything and Mildred, who is head of the dog pound, made him take the dog to Delfino. Delfino cared for him for three days and then sent him back to the owner who waited for a week before he brought Guapo to us. WE sent Guapo to Dr. Arturo who recruited his brother, an orthodontist, and they pinned Guapo’s jaw back together. He has a long recovery ahead of him.
Filipe Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: July, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: male, neutered Comments:       Murphy, Filipe and Blondie are litter mates. They were confiscated by a neighbor who said the owners didn’t take proper care of them. Murphy and Blondie have been adopted but Filipe was always the shyest. He’s such a sweetheart.
Dharma Status: Adopted, waiting for a ride to Ohio. Approx. Born: October, 2010 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       Dharma was found in the streets of Cancun. She lived near a mechanic shop (sort of ownership) and my friend Elizabeth fed her every day. Dharma had a litter of puppies and then showed signs of a TVT, which is a sexually transmitted disease that dogs can pass if sexually active and another excellent reason to spay and neuter. Anyway Elizabeth took her to the vet and had her treated for the TVT with chemo. After that Dharma came here. She has gone from terrified of people when Elizabeth started to feed her to an absolute love. She needs to gain weight and then be spayed and after that she will make an incredible addition to a loving family.
Storm Status: Gaining weight. Approx. Born: March 1, 2013 Vaccinations: One vaccination. Sex: Female, not spayed. Comments:       On March 16, I went to the Guatalupana, a poor section of Isla Mujeres, to give out tick and flea prevention medications. That is when I first saw these pups. they were two weeks old. The next Saturday I went back to check on them and one had died and the owner told me that the momma dog had stopped feeding them. She said that the last four were crying all the time and she would be happy for me to take them. So I brought them to the house and have been feeding them four times a day. They are doing very well, starting to move around more and they’re even drinking on their own now. Unfortunately she died April 30, 2013.
Rojo Status: Going to Minneapolis Approx. Born: November 11, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       Some children found a box of puppies and brought them to us. The four pups were absolutely covered with ticks. They had so many in each of their ears that I doubt they could hear. We got rid of the ticks but they still have other skin issues so they’re getting lots of tuna and vitamin E.
Puck Status: Going to Vancouver. Approx. Born: December 1, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       During our spay and neuter clinic in Bonfil, Cancun, an old man showed up with a crate full of puppies. He told us that the mother had disappeared and the woman who owned the mother asked him to get rid of the puppies, luckily he brought them to us. He was such a charmer and kept calling us all angels. The pups are gorgeous.
McDuff Status: Going to Vancouver. Approx. Born: November 1, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       This little guy was brought to me alone and definitely has some skin issues, but he’s starting to perk up. He didn’t like having his picture taken.
Lizzie (Platapus) Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Sept. 1, 2012 Vaccinations: Has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       She’s doing so well and is ready for a forever home. I saw her mom at the January spay and neuter clinic, she was a boxer, have a look at the under bite, I love under bites.
Ginger Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: May 6, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       This little sweet thing has the prettiest face you’ve ever seen.
Maxie Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: June, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: male, neutered Comments:       Elizabeth, one of the rescuers at the clinic had been watching this litter of pups. They lived with a family who really could not support them and all of the pups have terrible skin problems. Elizabeth convinced them to let me have them so I could work on their mange.
Momma Mimi Status: Adopted by Franca. Approx. Born: October, 2010 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       Franca called me to say that she’d found a golden retriever with a ton of ticks on her and that the dog looked like she might be nursing. I told her to bring her over. Well she had more ticks than I’ve ever seen on one dog. It took two days of picking and baths to get her cleaned up and we had to shave her. She’d definitely been used for breeding but she is either to old now, or was inconvenient, who knows, she’s here now and she’s a doll. She’s fattening up and will be spayed next week. She is house trained, walks on a leash and would be a gift to any home.
Barlito Status: Gaining weight. Approx. Born: March 1, 2013 Vaccinations: Too young for vaccinations. Sex: Male, not neutered. They are doing very well, starting to move around more and they’re even drinking on their own now.

Ming Status: Fattening up. Approx. Born: November 1, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       Ming is rooming with McDuff and her litter mates. As you can see we couldn’t get her to stop scratching long enough to take the picture but we will have that fixed up in no time. She’s going to be beautiful.
Filbee Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: October 10, 2012 Vaccinations: He has two vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       During the Nov. 2012 clinic in Bonfil we took in a momma dog with ten small pups. She was off of the street and we never put momma’s with puppies back on the street. So my friend Marcela offered to foster them for me. Five of them just came back to Isla Animals. Filbee has a few spots on his head that need to heal but he’s a great little guy.
Adelle Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: September 1, 2012 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       During the Nov. 2012 clinic in Bonfil we took in a momma dog with ten small pups. She was off of the street and we never put momma’s with puppies back on the street. Prudence Status: Gaining weight. Approx. Born: March, 2011 Vaccinations: She has one vaccinations. Sex: Female, not spayed. Comments:       This little sweetie was found running around in traffic downtown. She was terrified and wouldn’t let anyone near her. Finally my friend Ginnie caught her and brought her here. She has obviously been mistreated but we are working very hard to make her feel safe. Prudence went back to her owners, there was nothing we could do about it.

Cora Status: Adopted by Jen and David Approx. Born: December 1, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       During our spay and neuter clinic in Bonfil, Cancun, an old man showed up with a crate full of puppies. The pups are gorgeous.
Garafina Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: May, 2012 Vaccinations: She has her vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       My friend Brenda called me about a dog that she’d found on the south point of Isla Mujeres. The dog was running around scared and in heat. I asked Brenda to take the dog to Delfino to be spayed and then we could bring her here. Brenda called her Garafina and she’s an absolute doll.
Chimy Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: December 16, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       Chimy came in alone. She was recovered from an empty lot and is about the same age as Lucy and Ricky. I think she’s going to be a small dog but we’ll have to wait and see.
Terry Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: November 11, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       I took a litter of three from Cancun Animal Rescue. All beautiful brindled pups. Tulsa Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: July 6, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: female, spayed Comments:       Is she cute or what. And she loves that ball.
Monica Status: Needs a little time. Approx. Born: October, 2009 Vaccinations: She has one vaccinations and rabies. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       A family on the island came to the house to say that their sister had three maltese’s that she was mistreating. A male, a female and a puppy. They wanted me to take them. I said that I wanted to see them before I made any promises. They came back later with the three dogs. The mom is the smallest and older, the dad is the biggest and younger and the pup was at least 8-10 months old. They were well fed but covered with ticks and frightened. This is the mom, she is very sweet but a little nervous. I think that she just doesn’t like surprises. We can live with that until she gets used to the idea that no one is going to hurt her.
Max Status: Needs some time. Approx. Born: October, 2010 Vaccinations: He has one vaccination and a rabies shot. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       A family on the island came to the house to say that their sister had three maltese’s that she was mistreating. A male, a female and a puppy. They wanted me to take them. The mom is the smallest and older, the dad is the biggest and younger and the pup was at least 8-10 months old. They were well fed but covered with ticks and frightened. This is the male, he’s bigger, about 10 kilos and not as nervous as the mom but seems a little sad. We will have to love him up a bit.
Rodriguz Status: Available for adoption. Lucy Status: Working on some skin issues. Approx. Born: Dec. 16, 2012 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, not spayed. Comments:       This cutie was found by the side of the road with another pup when they were only four or five weeks old. Lucy is the smallest of the two but full of energy. She has a few skin issues but we are working on it. Lucy is just a peanut, she fits in the palm of your hand, we are wondering if she’s a chihuahua. Unfortunately she died.
Goldie Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: December 1, 2012 Vaccinations: She has three vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       During our spay and neuter clinic in Bonfil, Cancun, an old man showed up with a crate full of puppies. The pups are gorgeous.
Hector Status: Working on a bunch of stuff. Approx. Born: November 1, 2012 Vaccinations: He has had his first vaccination. Sex: Male, not neutered. Comments:       Hector’s a sad case. He’s about as bad as a puppy can get. Someone found him by the side of the road, he’d been injured and at first we thought that his back was broken. But he isn’t paralized and does better every day. It seems that the wound is in his neck but improving so it’s not something permanent. His skin is horrible, his calcium deficiancy is horrible but he hangs in there day after day. We are crossing our fingers. He’s a tough guy and now he gets milk and tuna fish. Not bad. Unfortunately he died.
Ajax Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: October 20, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       Ajax hangs out with Fiesta. She’s bigger but he’s faster.

Margo Status: Available for adoption. Female, spayed. Approx. Born: October 10, 2012 Vaccinations: She has her first vaccination. Sex: Female, not spayed. So my friend Marcela offered to foster them for me. Five of them just came back to Isla Animals. Margo was sick during the clinic so she didn’t get spayed but we will have her done soon.
Dora Status: adopted, waiting to go home. Approx. Born: December 1, 2012 Vaccinations: She has vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       During our spay and neuter clinic in Bonfil, Cancun, an old man showed up with a crate full of puppies. He told us that the mother had disappeared and the woman who owned the mother asked him to get rid of the puppies, luckily he brought them to us. He was such a charmer and kept calling us all angels. The pups are gorgeous.
Amber Status: Working on a few skin issues. Approx. Born: October 20, 2012 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Amber is doing really well. She’s running around in the sand with Fiesta and Ajax.
Franklin Rosevelt Status: Adopted by Charlie, my son. Waiting to go home. Approx. Born: 2009 Vaccinations: Has all his shots and rabies vaccines Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       This little guy was hit by a car and we couldn’t find his owner. He’s still not using his back legs but they’re not broken, mainly bruised. He’s such a sweetie, stays upstairs with us and follows me every where. He’ll be here for a few weeks before he’s available for adoption, that should give him time to fatten up and heal.
Patrick Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: Sept. 14, 2012 Vaccinations: He has two vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       We just finished a spay and neuter clinic on the island. We did 102 cats and dogs, our goal was 60, yahoo. This little guy was brought in with two other dogs that lived in the street in front of someones house. He was covered with ticks and very skinny so we kept him. He’s being fostered by Laura and Alan and learning all of his manners.
Hero Status: Fattening up. Approx. Born: December, 2008 Vaccinations: He has his first vaccination. Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       The joke is on the bad owner for this one. This owner named this dog killer, probably hoping for some cheap home security. Well Killer should have been named Pussy Cat because he’s just a huge sweet heart. He’s been mistreated for years, has a nasty scar and lump on his back and is sadly under nourished. Thelma, a concerned island visitor saved Hero from his bad situation and brought him here. We are going to neuter him and fatten him up.
Little Grey Status: Available for Adoption. Approx. Born: December 8, 2012 Vaccinations: She has two vaccinations. Sex: Female, spayed. Comments:       Little Grey was brought in during our spay and neuter clinic in a litter of six. She was the smallest one and had a respiratory issue but it’s cleared up and she’s doing well.
Par pup – Liam Status: Working on some issue. Approx. Born: Sept. 15, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, neutered. Comments:       This litter came from Playa del Carmen via Playa Animal Rescue. Irene’s Litter – Tyson Status: Working on some issues. Approx. Born: Sept. 6, 2012 Vaccinations: He has three vaccinations. Sex: Male, not neutered Comments:       Irene’s neighbour’s small dog got out once and that was one too many times. She had a litter of five puppies which Irene asked me to take care of. They should be small dogs.
Marcell Status: Fattening up. Approx. Born: December, 2009 Vaccinations: He has his first vaccination. Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       A family on the island found this cute guy on the street. They already had 3 or 4 dogs but the daughter said that she would take care of him. Now the daughter is going away to school and the family won’t keep him. So he’s here with us and we’re happy to have him. He needs to gain some weight but other than that he’s in pretty good shape. He was hit by a car a while ago and still has a limp but he uses his leg a bit more each day. He’s a very sweet quiet dog.
Clemente Status: Fattening up. Approx. Born: June 2012 Vaccinations: He has his first vaccination. Sex: Male, not neutered Comments:       Beverly called me to say that she and some friends had found three starving dogs in a back yard on the west side of the Salina Grande. She told me that they could hardly move when they’d first seen them but have perked up a bit now that they have had food and water for two days. When I went there it was a terrible situation. The yard was a disgusting dump. I talked to a neighbor who said the lady who lived at the house was nasty and didn’t care about her dogs and didn’t feed them. We managed to prop some old wood up against the rock wall and reach over to get Clemente because he was the smallest. The momma was tied up and the other black one was too big. Clemente has been amazing. He looks like a puppy but he’s actually at least 8 months old. At first he had trouble with the other pups but we put him with Pine nut, Tulsa and Lizzy and they wouldn’t be denied a new buddy at play time. He gets more at ease each day. What a trooper.

He still needs to be neutered, he was never healthy enough before.
Cabra Status: Getting healthy Approx. Born: June, 2012 Vaccinations: Has her first vaccination. Sex: Female, not spayed. Comments:       Cabra is Cupa’s litter mate. At first she seemed in better shape because she looked well fed but I’m afraid the big belly is from an enlarged spleen caused by ehrlichia, a tick borne disease. We have her on the proper medicines and she should make a full recovery. She looks like a dachshund mix.

He called the local pound and they came and did a sweep, picking up 30 or 40 animals. Many of them had owners and some of them were unowned but someone was watching out for them. These two were part of that second group. The stupid thing is that these dogs are spayed and vaccinated and sweet. Once they are removed another group will move in because the beach is across from a mangrove where there are tons of strays. They are trading good for bad. Now these sweeties are with me, their loss.

She was caught on the street during our clinic and we don’t think she had much contact, or at least positive contact with humans. BUT she loves hot dogs so we are getting a few pats in when she eats them. She is slowly getting use to us.
Star Status: In Denver and still growing Approx. Born: May 1, 2012 Vaccinations: too young Sex: Female Comments:       When ever I see a nursing mom I always ask around trying to find the puppies. Then I usually de-worm them and make sure they get vaccinated when they are old enough. I knew about a litter of three, but it was five days before I got back there. Unfortunately one had died. The grandmother told me to take the other two and agreed to spay the mother. That is the best we can ask for. I brought the two pups here and they are doing really well. Mainly eating and sleeping so far.

Blackie Status: He has a long way to go, but we’re working on it. Approx. Born: January, 2008 Vaccinations: too sick Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       So many people wrote and called me about this dog. It was incredible. I’ve treated his ear before but recently he has started to look really terrible. He lives in a house at the end of the main street. Finally we managed to get him here, it was difficult, he’s not that crazy about people in general. He tested positive for ehrlichia, heartworm and sometime in the last year he’s had distemper. We thought he was ancient but he’s only about four years old. He’s also missing many of his bottom teeth, probably from the distemper, it’s hard on the teeth. Blackie has a long long way to go to get healthy and there are many factors involved. A woman named Karla has agreed to pay for his treatment but I’m am pretty sure that when he starts to feel better he’ll jump my fence and that will make it difficult to finish his treatment. We shall see, cross your fingers for Blackie.
Ebby Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: October 1, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       A concerned tourist found three pups on Isla Mujeres, but the tourist didn’t know about Isla Animals so they took the pups all the way to a rescue in Cancun. Ricardo, who runs that rescue doesn’t take pups because he has too many bigger dogs so he called me. The tourists brought them all the way back to the island and now we’re working hard to make them healthy and beautiful. Ebby’s skin has been the hardest to heal, the hot, moist weather doesn’t help. She’s a trooper about all the baths we give her and I think as the weather gets hotter the cool baths feel better.

Hadley Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: January 26, 2012 Vaccinations: June 13, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Some teenage boys came to the house last night. They brought me this beautiful puppy. These teens are working with the animals and found the pup in the Guatalupana. I’m still not clear on the whole thing because Hadley is in good shape. She has been cared for – so I’m wondering if someone is looking for her. Well they know where to come, we shall see. Isn’t she beautiful.
Sweet Pea Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: June, 2011 Vaccinations: June 13, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       There is a very loved dog on Isla Mujeres and that is Smiley who was adopted by the owner of Jax, a local restaurant. A friend of hers had always wanted a dog like Smiley and one day she saw a small beautiful dog on the street being badly treated for getting into someones garbage. Sweet Pea was also covered with ticks. They brought her here and we cleaned her up so they could take her home. Well we think Sweet Pea has had a rough time and she’s pretty nervous right now and having trouble adjusting to new people so they brought her back here. I was thrilled to see her, she just needs time, time to feel safe and loved. She is amazing, she is getting better every day and she’s beautiful.

Her dog had pups and she kept four of them. I’ve been going out there to de-worm and vaccinate them but the last time I was there Theo had an infected leg so I brought her here and I brought Cleo to keep her company. They’ve been here for three weeks now and I think that the owner wouldn’t mind if I could find them homes. I think they would have a better life in a new home.

Toto Status: Adopted, going to Toronto Approx. Born: February 2010 Vaccinations: March 13, 2012 Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       This is the sweetest little guy. He has obviously been mistreated because he is pretty unsure of himself but we are going to love him up. Born: Sept. 4, 2010 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Chima and her 6 one day old pups were pulled off of death row at the pound by Ricardo. He fostered them for three weeks while we got the rest of the 50 puppies settled in and then he brought them here. Chima was in really bad shape, malnurished, mange, ring worm and probably ehrlichia which we will treat when she stops nursing. Now she has weaned her pups and she is gaining weight and her fur is growing back. She’s a great little dog, we love her.
Momma Chima Pup Three Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Feb. 4, 2012 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       These pups came to us in pretty bad shape. Lily Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Jan. 3, 2012 Vaccinations: Feb. 20, 2012,March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       There was a big spay and neuter clinic in Merida and these babes came in very young. After a few weeks they came here. When they arrived I had so many pups and they are too young to vaccinate so I put them in my bathtub where they’d be the most isolated. At first they had some tummy problems but recovered quickly. I think they are going to be really big.

She was so covered in ticks, the little tiny kind, that I think it was a record, I’ve never seen so many on a tiny little body. But we got it taken care of after two baths and hours of picking, which, if you know me, you know I don’t mind. Now she is charging around. She gets along with every person and dog and thinks that she should be part of everything that’s going on.

Dixie Status: Adopted, going to Edmonton Approx. Born: October 1, 2011 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Dixie was rescued from the streets by a family that has a Roasted Chicken Restaurant. She’s a dream, loves people and loves to play with the other dogs.
Lena Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: October 1, 2011 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       Lena is a sweet energetic young dog. We don’t know what happened to her leg but we couldn’t save it. There is a saying in Mexico, that the dogs have three legs and a spare. Lena hasn’t slowed down one bit. I think that her bad leg hadn’t functioned properly in a long time so she was already used to depending on the other three.

Maia Status: Going to Edmonton Approx. Born: March 2011 Vaccinations: April 5, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Maia has had a long sad history. She lived in Puerta Juarez which is on the mainland where the Isla Mujeres ferry lands. She was kidnapped from her original family and then returned to the same street after all her hair fell out. My friend Pamela, found her and with tons of TLC and medicine healed her skin. Unfortunately her landlord said, “only one dog” and since she already had one she had to give Maia to a new family who didn’t take proper care of her. Pamela brought her to one of our Spay and Neuter clinics where we spay her and then brought her to Isla Animals. Finally she’s safe and I know she’s feeling better every day. Her skin still has a ways to go. We have found out that she’s a Catahoula-Leopard Herding dog. Wow.

Buffy Status: Available for adoption Approx. Born: October, 2009 Vaccinations: April 5, 2012 Sex: Female, we are not sure if she has been spayed yet. Comments:       Buffy was found wondering the streets of Isla Mujeres. She was picked up by the dog catchers and taken to Mundaca Park where they have a makeshift holding area. Because she was so much smaller than the other dogs the woman who manages the pens felt sorry for her and brought her to me. When she first arrived she shut down and wouldn’t let anyone near her. Buffy stayed that way for a few days, warming up just a bit until someone took her for a walk along the beach. Well, it turns out she’s a water dog, imagine that, a poodle water dog, she couldn’t wait to get in the ocean and play. She even grabbed her own leash and walked herself right into the water. After that she came alive. She’s happy, well behaved, cuddly and all around incredible.

They asked the owner if they could have the dog and the owner said yes so the ladies brought her here. She was filthy with dread locks from head to toe and very nervous in her new situations. It didn’t take her long to adjust. We cut off her dread locks and then my friend Dian spent three hours grooming her. Oh what a beauty. She has a few skin issues but should heal fast. The ladies that brought her decided that it wouldn’t work to take her with them so she is here with us. She needs another vaccination, a bit of healing and a whole lot of love. She already fetches and sits on command. She may be brilliant.

She is vaccinated but not spayed due to her age.
