  1. Last weekend I went to an area called the Guatalupana. The government on the island has been absconding with property that belongs to the islanders. So a large group of Islenos squatted on a big piece of property mid island on the Carrabean side. It has been a few years now and they still don't have water, electricity or sewage. Most of the homes are shacks and many of the homeowners have dug wells or bought large water tanks that sit in their front yards. Of course there are dogs everywhere and when we have spay and neuter clinics we go there to pick up animals. And when we get donations we go there with de-wormer, collars, vitamins, food and medicine if needed. I would love sometime to be able to vaccinate all the animals but we will need a bigger budget for that as most of our funds go to the sterilization clinics. The children are wonderful and after many, many visits the people are used to seeing me hang around making a big fuss over their dogs.
  2. There has been a wonderful group of people that have supported Isla Animals for years. Cheryl House has created this group and stayed with it to help us save pups and spay and neuter every cat and dog we can get our hands on. This year has been one of the best as far as donations and we are so grateful and pleased with the work it has allowed us to do. Below is the list of donors and the beautiful dog that has sadly passed but instigated such generosity. His name was Dr. Zhivago. Thank you all for your support. 2011 ROSIE'S BOW WOW CLUB The club for 2011 raised a total of $2,950. In memory of Dr. Zhivago Extra Large Bones $300 & Over Cheryl House. 3. Jeff and I just got back to Mexico a few days ago. We're having a spay and neuter clinic next week and then the normal dog stuff from there. I would like to do a sweep of the island, door to door, working on vaccinations and spaying and neutering. I mean really - we've been back two days and we already have a very weak momma with eight pups. Then I got a call about another dog with eight pups and Jeff and I are about to go pick up four. This has to stop. I called my new momma - Momma Rina after the hurricane that wasn't. Here is our new mom warming up her pups after their bath this morning, such a good mom. This must be black dog week, out of the thirteen puppies there is only one white one. We are so looking forward to moving ahead this year. With all the rescue groups and people that we are working with now, we can get more done and we're hoping that we can get some help with this. Already we have some wonderful monthly donators, and it makes a huge difference. So many people ask me what they can do to help, well it's really easy. If we can get enough people donating $10.00 a month we will have a budget to work with. Ten people giving up two starbuck coffees every month can buy enough dog food for a week, or three spays or four neuters, or twelve vaccines, or five distemper tests, or four parvo tests, or two and a half medium crates, or ten bottles of specialty shampoos, or two bottles of de-wormer, or five dog rides to the airport, or five health certificates, and on and on. Every penny goes to the dogs, there is no administration, we pay Marcelino's salary (he works at the house and helps with the dogs). IT'S ALL FOR THE DOGS. We've been home three nights and already have two momma's with their pups. There is no where else for these dogs to go. We will find homes for the pups and spay the moms. Each spayed female is one step closer to a better life for dogs in Mexico. If you already donate, ask a friend to do it too, and ask their friends to do it as well. Ten dollars a month and we can make a huge difference together. I forgot to mention in this blog yesterday that the Isla Animals Website is set up to do monthly donations. If you scroll down to the very bottom of the front page there is a donate button, click on that and then there are instructions on how to continue. Thank you everybody, in advance, who donates. It makes all the difference. We are setting up for a big spay and neuter clinic today and getting ready for all the street puppies that we find.
  4. We are doing another big spay and neuter clinic in Corales near Rancho Viejo which is next to Cancun. This is our second clinic in this location. Last time we ended up with over fifty puppies. We can put the dogs back on the street but never the puppies. We often re-home the dogs if we can as well. Anyway it has been the worst year for distemper that I've ever seen. Unfortunately we lost about 20% of those pups to distemper. It only takes one distemper pup to infect an entire group of un-vaccinated puppies. So this April we're going to test every puppy that comes in. The tests are two hundred pesos a piece, about eighteen dollars, we want to have seventy five available for that last week of April. I'm asking if any of you can help by buying one or two tests it would make a huge difference. You can donate on our pay pal and make a note that it's for distemper tests and that's exactly what it will be used for. This is an extra cost that we didn't figure into our budget when we were making the original plans. On a more fun note, Isla Animals has had a small explosion of puppies. First we got a litter of nine. Pepe spotted the mom and her pups next to the bull ring in Cancun and has been waiting for them to be old enough to bring here. Then we got a moma and her seven pups. Everyone is healthy, has already been tested for distemper and is adjusting well. By the way Rusty is doing much better.
  5. The race was great. There's lots of room for improvement but for a first effort we are all very happy. To all of the incredible volunteers, Jeff and I are so, so grateful. And to those who helped set things up ahead of time with the city and the schools and the race route, we couldn't possibly have done it without you. We haven't finished with the tally because Jeff is still working at the music festival but as soon as we have numbers I will post them. We had over sixty runners thanks to all of you wonderful people who signed up to sponsor school kids. And for you generous supporters who sponsored teams of five, it added so much excitement. Unfortunately we couldn't fill all the teams but next year people will have a better idea of what's going on. The whole event was fun and involved the entire community. From the island government to the police department to the Navy that allowed us to run on the runway. We had help from the Red Cross, they sent their ambulance to be on standby. We had runners of all ages from many different countries. For the first year we couldn't have asked for more.
  6. What could be better than getting a puppy or dog off the street. How can you beat putting meat on a starving animals bones or help out a dog before it's abused and learns to mistrust humans. It's the best feeling in the world. Help me prevent another box of unwanted pups being left on a vacant lot. I can do all that and more if I have the funds. Help us turn this Into this It's a great gift idea for the person who has everything. You can buy them a monthly donation to Isla Animals. I will make sure that every penny that you donate is put to work. It's the most wonderful thing to know that we can count on a certain amount of money coming in each month. It allows me to plan ahead in this work that is other wise, to say the least, financially chaotic. And if you are looking for something different you can donate a certain amount of spays and neuters in someone's name. The surgery averages out to $20.00 an animal and it's the bottom line solution to overpopulation and suffering of animals in Mexico. Donate and then let me know by email bayfirestd@aol.com so I can make sure that a Christmas card is sent to your friend or family member. They will love it.
  7. Thank You to the Bow Wow Club For Your generous Donation!

She came in with her brother Davie and the two of them stay close. They are also part of my teenage group and they all have a blast together.
Davie Status: Available for adoption Approx. Born: Nov. 1, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Roz and Davie are litter mates. They were found together in the streets during our spay and neuter campaign, someone must have been watching out for them because they are in good shape. Davie is shyer than his sister and loves a good cuddle.
Monkey Status: Growing hair Approx. Born: October 1, 2009 Vaccinations: not yet Sex: Male, not neutered Comments:       We had a three day clinic in Puerto Juarez, it’s the area where we catch the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Someone found Monkey in the street and brought him to us. He looked so bad that we didn’t neuter him, instead we brought him home to the island. He’s going to be so handsome. All he needs is some time and a couple of special baths, medicine and TLC.
Jani Status: Available for Adoption Approx. Born: Oct. 20, 2012 Vaccinations: Dec. 5, 2011, Dec. 31, 2011, Jan. 26, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Jani came here in a box when she was 3 weeks old. Someone found her on the island and didn’t know how to take care of her. She has done very well and is sweet and playful. Oh and she loves to eat.
Kennel one – Blondie Status: Available for Adoption Approx. Born: Dec. 16, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       This little cutie came in with one litter mate, Loca. She’s a healthy, strong pup and a little crazy with her toys. She loves to run in the sand, sometimes doing somersaults if her body gets ahead of her feet.
Kennel three – Nikki Status: Available for Adoption Approx. Born: Nov. 1, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Nikki was found on the streets of Bonfil and has survived well. She hasn’t had any issues and plays well with all the teenagers, meaning my older pups.
Gillian Status: Available for adoption Approx. Born: Nov. 1, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       We named Gillian after the miracle worker who ran the recovery room at our clinic in Bonfil. They both have the same color hair. Gillian has a ridge down her back like a “ridgeback” but she also has shorter legs like a dachshund. What a mix.
Yoda Status: Available for Adoption Approx. Born: Nov. 24, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 21, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       When a woman named Marcela brought us the litter of eight males she’d added two little females. I mean really whats the difference eight, ten, when you already have close to fifty. Don’t tell Jeff. There was no way that she could’ve been called anything else but Yoda. She’s just as smart too.

Toto Status: Adopted, going to Toronto Approx. Born: February 2010 Vaccinations: March 13, 2012 Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       This is the sweetest little guy. He has obviously been mistreated because he is pretty unsure of himself but we are going to love him up. He also has one wounded hip so he will be with us for a while before he is ready for a new home. He is perking up already and using his sore leg more everyday. Yahoo.

Valencia Status: Available for adoption Approx. Born: September 1, 2011 Vaccinations: Jan. 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 10, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Valencia came from the streets of Bonfil in Cancun, during our January Spay and Neuter Clinic. She is such a sweet easy going dog. I found her a home on the island but the owner already had another dog and the neighbors objected to have two dogs next door so she came back today. We were so happy to see her, she’s a lovely as ever.
Momma Chima Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Sept. 4, 2010 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Chima and her 6 one day old pups were pulled off of death row at the pound by Ricardo. He fostered them for three weeks while we got the rest of the 50 puppies settled in and then he brought them here. Chima was in really bad shape, malnurished, mange, ring worm and probably ehrlichia which we will treat when she stops nursing. Now she has weaned her pups and she is gaining weight and her fur is growing back. She’s a great little dog, we love her.
Momma Chima Pup Three Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Feb. 4, 2012 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       These pups came to us in pretty bad shape. It’s clear that the mom didn’t have much to offer. She also passed on a ton of ring worm which causes painful inflammation in pups that small. BUT now that they are here with us we’re giving them extra, high vitamin food and skin treatments as well as lots of TLC.
Momma Chima Pup Four Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx.
Kennel 0ne, Loca Status: Going to Edmonton Approx. Born: Dec. 16, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       This little cutie came in with one litter mate, Blondie. She is much smaller than blondie and has had trouble with the skin on her face. We are rubbing it with creams every day and slowly she is growing hair again. I think she will be small and lean but I’ve been wrong before.
Lily Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Jan. 3, 2012 Vaccinations: Feb. 20, 2012,March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       There was a big spay and neuter clinic in Merida and these babes came in very young. After a few weeks they came here. When they arrived I had so many pups and they are too young to vaccinate so I put them in my bathtub where they’d be the most isolated. At first they had some tummy problems but recovered quickly. I think they are going to be really big.

Poppy Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Jan. 3, 2012 Vaccinations: Feb. 20, 2012,March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       There was a big spay and neuter clinic in Merida and these babes came in very young. Shilo Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: Jan. 3, 2012 Vaccinations: Feb. 12, 2012, March 4, 2012, March 25, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       Shilo was dropped off on someone’s door step and they in turn brought her here. She was so covered in ticks, the little tiny kind, that I think it was a record, I’ve never seen so many on a tiny little body. But we got it taken care of after two baths and hours of picking, which, if you know me, you know I don’t mind. Now she is charging around. She gets along with every person and dog and thinks that she should be part of everything that’s going on.

Dixie Status: Adopted, going to Edmonton Approx. Born: October 1, 2011 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Dixie was rescued from the streets by a family that has a Roasted Chicken Restaurant. She was really skinny so they fed her a whole chicken everyday and she fattened up fast. Then they brought her here because they already had five dogs. She’s a dream, loves people and loves to play with the other dogs.
Lena Status: Going to Minneapolis. Approx. Born: October 1, 2011 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       Lena is a sweet energetic young dog. We don’t know what happened to her leg but we couldn’t save it. There is a saying in Mexico, that the dogs have three legs and a spare. Lena hasn’t slowed down one bit. I think that her bad leg hadn’t functioned properly in a long time so she was already used to depending on the other three.

Maia Status: Going to Edmonton Approx. Born: March 2011 Vaccinations: April 5, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Maia has had a long sad history. She lived in Puerta Juarez which is on the mainland where the Isla Mujeres ferry lands. She was kidnapped from her original family and then returned to the same street after all her hair fell out. My friend Pamela, found her and with tons of TLC and medicine healed her skin. Unfortunately her landlord said, “only one dog” and since she already had one she had to give Maia to a new family who didn’t take proper care of her. Pamela brought her to one of our Spay and Neuter clinics where we spay her and then brought her to Isla Animals. Finally she’s safe and I know she’s feeling better every day. Her skin still has a ways to go. We have found out that she’s a Catahoula-Leopard Herding dog. Wow.
Momma Chima Pup one Status: doing well Approx. Born: Feb. 4, 2012 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       These pups came to us in pretty bad shape. It’s clear that the mom didn’t have much to offer. She also passed on a ton of ring worm which causes painful inflammation in pups that small. BUT now that they are here with us we’re giving them extra, high vitamin food and skin treatments as well as lots of TLC.
Momma Chima Pup Two Status: doing well Approx.
Buffy Status: Available for adoption Approx. Born: October, 2009 Vaccinations: April 5, 2012 Sex: Female, we are not sure if she has been spayed yet. Comments:       Buffy was found wondering the streets of Isla Mujeres. She was picked up by the dog catchers and taken to Mundaca Park where they have a makeshift holding area. Because she was so much smaller than the other dogs the woman who manages the pens felt sorry for her and brought her to me. When she first arrived she shut down and wouldn’t let anyone near her. Buffy stayed that way for a few days, warming up just a bit until someone took her for a walk along the beach. Well, it turns out she’s a water dog, imagine that, a poodle water dog, she couldn’t wait to get in the ocean and play. She even grabbed her own leash and walked herself right into the water. After that she came alive. She’s happy, well behaved, cuddly and all around incredible.
Ella Status: Available for Adoption Approx. Born: Nov. 10, 2011 Vaccinations: January 27, 2012, Feb. 21, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Ella was another pup dropped anonymously at my door and we are so glad to have her. She loves hot dogs and loves to play with the other pups.

Momma Chima Pup Five Status: adopted Approx. Born: Feb. 4, 2012 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       This puppy came to us in the worst shape. One of her back legs was three times bigger than it should be and her ring worm was causing her feet to swell. She is responding well to anti-biotics and catching up to the others in size. We are watching her closely.
Momma Chima Pup Six Status: adopted Approx. Born: Feb. 4, 2012 Vaccinations: April 3, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       These pups came to us in pretty bad shape. It’s clear that the mom didn’t have much to offer. She also passed on a ton of ring worm which causes painful inflammation in pups that small. BUT now that they are here with us we’re giving them extra, high vitamin food and skin treatments as well as lots of TLC.

Kennel one – Max Status: Available for adoption. Approx. Born: Dec. 16, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       This handsome guy came in with Arena, we assume they’re littermates. They love to play and then lie around on top of each other.
Valencia Status: Adopted Approx. Born: Oct. 10, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       This beautiful puppy wants her own person so much. She loves to sit on your lap and get her neck rubbed.
Pablo Status: Adopted Approx. Born: Sept. 24, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Male, neutered Comments:       This is a very special puppy. He was found on the street with a broken leg. On Jan. 28 Pepe put a pin in his femur and Pablo is using the leg a little more every day. He’s also fattening up, he was really skinny when he first came. And he never complains, he and buttercup are best friends.
Buggy Status: adopted Approx. Born: Nov. 24, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       This poor little thing has about every different kind of skin ailment there is available. She has bad scars on her back, ring worm, mange, and cut all around her ears. She has a long way to go but doesn’t complain too much when we subject her to all kinds of baths, creams and dips.

Utah Status: Adopted Approx. Born: Sept. 15, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       This family of three came in together, Utah, Chili and Oakie. They were born in a home with a nice family who kept the fourth pup and brought us these three. They were pretty shy when they first arrived but have come around beautifully.

Chili Status: Adopted Approx. Born: Sept. 15, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Male, Nuetered Comments:       This family of three came in together, Utah, Chili and Oakie. They were born in a home with a nice family who kept the fourth pup and brought us these three. They were pretty shy when they first arrived but have come around beautifully. Unfortunately Chili has a nasty wound on his right thigh so we are treating it and he’s miserable in his cone of shame. (elizabethan collar)

Oakie Status: Adopted Approx. Born: Sept. 15, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 13, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       This family of three came in together, Utah, Chili and Oakie. Curly – Posey Status: Gone to Mineapolis Approx. Born: Nov. 24, 2011 Vaccinations: January 26, 2012, Feb. 21, 2012, March 22, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       When Marcela brought us the litter of eight males she’d added two little females. I mean really whats the difference eight, ten, when you already have close to fifty. Don’t tell Jeff.

Betty Boop Status: Adopted Approx. Born: January, 2011 Vaccinations: January 29, 2012, March 4, 2012 Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       She was caught in the street during our spay and neuter clinic. Poor thing was so scared that she wouldn’t eat and she had an infected eye so we were afraid that she might have distemper. We tested her and it was negative. She was just scared and she has a cherry eye. Wow has she come around. She’s in my one foster home with Laura and Alan and having a great time.

Cha Cha Status: Adopted Approx. Born: October 2010 Vaccinations: February 11, 2012, March 11, 2012 Sex: Female, not spayed Comments:       Two women jogged by this sweet dog everyday and couldn’t stand the sight of her tied up on a short rope surrounded by her own messes. They asked the owner if they could have the dog and the owner said yes so the ladies brought her here. She was filthy with dread locks from head to toe and very nervous in her new situations. It didn’t take her long to adjust. We cut off her dread locks and then my friend Dian spent three hours grooming her. Oh what a beauty. She has a few skin issues but should heal fast. The ladies that brought her decided that it wouldn’t work to take her with them so she is here with us. She needs another vaccination, a bit of healing and a whole lot of love. She already fetches and sits on command. She may be brilliant.

Bella Status: Gone to Tierra de los Animales, still up for adoption Approx. Born: May 2010 Vaccinations: Has all of her vaccinations Sex: Female, spayed Comments:       Like Nina, Bella had a good home but things happen and now she needs a new home. She is a sweet, shy and loves to cuddle. Bella is sleek like a gray hound and runs like the wind. She is also house trained and knows her manners. Frankie Status: Gone to Pawsitive Match Approx. I’ve never seen that before. They were saved by a woman named Marcela who brought them to me to find them homes. What a handsome bunch. I bet you can guess why we called him Frankie.
