Adoptions

Finding a companion animal for adoption on Isla Mujeres could never be easier. At any given time there are an average of 20 animals that are fully vetted and waiting to go to their forever home. You can make arrangements to meet them personally by contacting us at bayfirestd@yahoo.com or islandanimals@yahoo.com.

Animals can travel with their new owners as long as the airline permits. (Except to England or Ireland where a 6 month quarantine is required.) It is so easy, just follow the steps below. For a more detailed explaination, see the bottom of this page.

  1. Call your airline to be sure they will let you travel with a pet.
  2. Obtain helth Certificate by taking your new pet to Dr. Vega at the island clinic or contacting Alison at bayfirestd@aol.com.
  3. Buy a kennel in Cancun for transport. You can also borrow one of ours if the right size is available. You can bring this back on your next visit, or donate it to your local animal shelter. We always appreciate a donation, if possible, for the use of the kennel.
  4. Hit the road, or rather fly away, with your new loved one!

We have sent animals from Isla Mujeres all over the world!

Pups in the Spotlight:

These and others are patiently awaiting adoption. There is something special about Alison’s dogs and if you would like to be one of the lucky few to take one home, please contact her at bayfirestd@aol.com

Name: Fluffy Status: Available
Approx. Age: 1 1/2 years Sex: Male

Dec. 07, update. Fluffy is in Denver and still looking for a home. Fluffy is a new arrival, someone found him in the street. He was covered with tics and hungry. We bathed him and pulled off all the tics and gave him a great big dinner. He is a quieter dog and he loves people plus gets along with other dogs very well. I gave him his bad haircut, not one of my talents, with proper hair care he will be so handsome.

Name: Oso Status: Adopted
Approx. Age: 1 1/2 years Sex: Male
Comments:
I went to New York. Oso means bear in Spanish. This little guy must have been a lot fatter and fluffier when he got this name. For now he is very thin and is having skin problems. We are working on it and until he is nice and fluffy again he will stay with us. Hopefully he will be well enough soon because he is a little shy and needs a forever home where he can run.

Name: Curly Status: Adopted
Approx. Age: six week Sex: Male

April 9th 2008, a woman called me from Cancun to say that she had three basset hound pups. She had rescued a basset hound from the street and taken it to the vet who told her it was bloated because it had a heart problem and was retaining water. Well it had three puppies two weeks later, great vet. She said she lived in a small apartment and already had three dogs and could I take the pups. I couldn’t resist. They are healthy and as cute as can be.

Name: Peewee Status: Available
Approx. Age: 6 months Sex: Male
Comments:
We found Pewee and his litter mate Kiwi at a gas station near Grand Puerto in Cancun. There were two litters together, thirteen pups in all but when we first saw them they were too young to take from the mother. When we finally brought them to the island there were only seven left. Unfortunately these are the only two that survived so they are tough and unbelievably sweet. Peewee is shy but more outgoing than his litter mate Kiwi. He is handsome and healthy and will make a great friend for some lucky person. He has been neutered and is current on all of his vaccinations.

Name: Maybelle Status: Adopted
Approx. Age: 1 year Sex: Female

I went to New York. Someone brought this beauty into Pepe's clinic. She is just as sweet as she could be. She has some skin problems on her back that are getting better all the time. Her favorite thing is to go to the beach and charm the tourists. There is still some fur missing where she had the skin problems but she is healed and ready to go.

Name: Frida Status: Available
Approx. Age: 1 year Sex: Female

Somebody found this little sweet heart by the side of the road, she was in very bad shape. They took her to our vet Pepe. He was going to spay her but after an examination he decided that she wasn't healthy enough. So I have her here, her skin is bad, she is very thin and has limited energy. Her recovery has been steady but slow. She loves Marcelino, who helps us with the dogs, and actually jumps up when she sees him. It warms my heart. With time she will be maginificent.

Name: Roco Status: Available
Approx. Age: 6 years Sex: Male
Comments:
Roco has been here for a long time. When he came to us he was almost blind so every time a group of vets came down to do spays and neuters I would get one of them to operate on his eyes. It took five operations but now he sees and is doing fine. He was the favorite of our old caretaker which is why he is still here, but the caretaker left and couldn't take him. He is a quiet sweet unassuming little guy who brightens up when he gets any attention and sleeps a lot. He would be a lovely dog for a quiet home.

Name: Kiwi Status: Available

She has been spayed and is current on all of her vaccinations.

Name: Perra Faira Status: Available
Approx. Age: 2 years Sex: Female
Comments:
A woman brought this female to my house because she was getting too protective. The family had named her Perra Fea which means Ugly Bitch. I instantly renamed her Perra Faira. She is taking her time settling in. She is not used to the other dogs but we think that time with other dogs is just what she needs. She is already wagging her tail whenever someone pays attention to her and is learning to walk on a leash. Give us time, she is going to be great.

Name: Tristen Status: In Recovery
Approx. Age: six week Sex: Male

May 18, I fell off a chair and broke my leg. I am getting better. April 20, 2008, Marcelino (who helps us with the dogs) had been telling me that he knew that a mom in the monte (woods)near our house had had pups so we've been watching for them. The other day on the way back to the house we saw the mom and behind her trotted a 6 week old pup. The mother doesn't like people and ran away but the pup wasn’t fast enough and we managed to pick her up by the fence. That night we set racoon traps to catch the rest of the pups. The first one we trapped was a male with the most beautiful markings on his face.

April 9th 2008, a woman called me from Cancun to say that she had three based hound pups. She had rescued a based hound from the street and taken it to the vet who told her it was bloated because it had a heart problem and was retaining water. Well it had three puppies two weeks later, great vet. She said she lived in a small apartment and already had three dogs and could I take the pups. I couldn’t resist. They have been vaccinated, bathed, de-wormed and loved.

Name: Moma Wera Status: Available
Approx. Age: 1 1/2 years Sex: Female
Comments:
This beautiful moma was brought to us from Cancun. She came with her female pup Negrita. She loves people and wants a place of her own that she can guard and take care of. She is regal and playful at the same time. We spayed her on October 29th and she is up on all of her vaccinations.

Name: Daisey Status: Adopted
Approx. Age: 3 months Sex: Female
Comments:
I have gone to British Columbia with Allen and Laura and I feel so lucky. You should have seen her. Three island teenagers found her by the side of the road, she was tiny, skinny and had very little hair and infected eyes. She has been slow to catch up but you should see her now. Her fur shines, her eyes shine and she loves to play. She is in a foster home and they love her. The interesting thing is that from this poor grungy pup emerged a black cocker spaniel mix.

Name: Moma Houdini Status: Adopted
Approx. Age: 3 years Sex: Female
Comments:
I went to New York. We call all our females that have had pups moma something, it helps us keep track. Moma Houdini has appeared and disappeared many times but now she is here to stay. She is big and beautiful and loves affection. She has had many litters but that's it because now that she is spayed. At the moment she is living in my studio with Ray and Poncha because all three of them have just been treated for heartworm. She should be good to go in a few weeks and would love a forever home.

Name: Ella Status: Available
Approx. Age: 2 years Sex: Female
Comments:
I love Ella. If we could keep another dog it would be her. She sweet and cuddly and street smart and gets along with all the other dogs - big and small. She is also house trained.

Detailed Adoption Process

The first and most important thing is finding out if your airline takes animals. Most charter flights do not take animals. Most major airlines usually do. There are temperature restrictions but these are usually a problem in July and August, and in January and February. Some airlines don't worry about it at all.

Most people think that animals from Mexico need to be quarantined, not true. The animal needs a certificate of health from a vet issued within a week of departure. They also need a certificate proving they have been vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days before departure. We supply a booklet with the official stickers taken off the vaccine bottles.

Once all of that has been obtained you need a crate. It has to be big enough for the animal to stand up and turn around in. Some airlines are pickier then others about this but it's better to be prepared. We have many crates that we are happy to offer for transportation for a donation if possible.

On the day of departure one can take the dog or cat across to the mainland on the ferry if they are in a crate. We have an excellent van company that will transport people with animals to the airport. They need to be reserved in advance and are always very helpful. One should arrive 3 hours before departure. Take your papers to the ecologia office and they will check them over and give you what ever you need to check into your flight with your pet. If needed I have some one that escorts people to the airport and gets all the proper paper work and stays with the passengers until the dog or cat has been checked. In case there is a problem he can bring the animal back to the island.

When you reach your destination, they will bring your animal to you at the special cargo part of the baggage claim area; it is usually in the same room. You simply go through customs and show them your papers and it usually goes very smoothly. Sometimes they ask a few extra questions but mostly it is a breeze.

Next you take your forever grateful pet home and love it as much as you can.
